La Porcherie
The commune has a population of 619 over 3134 hectares and an altitude of 480m. The old name for La Porcherie was 'Pulcherie' which means in vulgar latin 'the pretty noble'. It has, as backdrop, the 'Mont Gargan' and the Monédières. The castle that was at Chateauvieux was destroyed in 1210, the medieval motte, however, is still visible.
The church, whose foundations date back to the XIIth century is dedicated to St Julien and St Roch. The entrance a superb piece of work. Inside, there are statues of:
a Virgin of Pity carved in wood from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries;
a reliquary statuere of St Roch;
the stained glass windows behind the alter was donated by the d'Arsonval family in 1833;The 'domaine de La Borie' saw the birth of Arsène d'Arsonval in 1851. This great scientist, who died on the 31st of December 1940 is remembered by a statue in the square by the church.
The serpentine rocks of the 'Pierres du Mas' are a geological point of interest. You can also discover the old gold mine of Champvet and its 82 Gallo-Roman graves.
The lakes of the 'Pierres du Mas' and of 'Piquette' are good attractions for fishermen and walkers as the commune offers several trails.
